Minshuku Nagoma faces the Seto Inland Sea and it is located on the opposite shore of Imabari with quiet surroundings. From Nagoma, the guests can see the city lights of Imabari at night and Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in Shikoku, in the day.
The building of Minshuku Nagoma was re-built in spring of 2008. The new building is filled with a lot of thoughts and special perspectives of the host and Okami, wife of the host and inn manager. It is hard to list all of them up but here are some examples. The host has particular thoughts about wood so the counter and the tables at the dining hall were all order made. And Okami designed and decorated each room based on themes, flowers and trees, with vases, flames, washstands, etc. These elements add softness to the concrete building. One specific element that should be mentioned is the ceramic wash bowl. This bowl is Tobe pottery specially made by an artist. Other newly installed features include en-suite toilets and an elevator.
The most important thought focuses on the dishes. "I would like our guests to finish all the dishes rather than finishing drinks" says Okami. "I hope our guests fully enjoy our dishes quietly and slowly" her thought toward the dishes is very strong. Nagoma purchases fishes come from Kurushima Strait that are wild-caught by contracted fisherman. Since fishes are so fresh and tasty, there is no need for strong seasonings. Simply cooked fish in season will be served; black rockfish and sea bream in spring, epinephelus akaara and bass in summer, octopus and big fin reef squid in fall, flat fish in winter.
What has not changed is the hospitality provided by the host family, tied together their their aim to please guests. Their attitude toward the guests is not excessive but friendly and comfortable. I saw a guest saying "The building improved but the heart of the minshuku has not changed. It is nice to see." Okami with her warm smile. It's an impressive scene that explains what kind of ryokan Nagoma is.
